RESUMO

Optical sensors, crucial in diverse fields like gravitational wave detection, biomedical imaging, and structural health monitoring, rely on optical phase to convey valuable information. Enhancing sensitivity is important for detecting weak signals. Exceptional points (EPs), identified in non-Hermitian systems, offer great potential for advanced sensors, given their marked response to perturbations. However, strict physical requirements for operating a sensor at EPs limit broader applications. Here, we introduce an EP-enhanced sensing platform featuring plug-in external sensors separated from an EP control unit. EPs are achieved without modifying the sensor, solely through control-unit adjustments. This configuration converts and amplifies optical phase changes into quantifiable spectral features. By separating sensing and control functions, we expand the applicability of EP enhancement to various conventional sensors. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate a sixfold reduction in the detection limit of fiber-optic strain sensing using this configuration. This work establishes a universal platform for applying EP enhancement to diverse phase-dependent structures, promising ultrahigh-sensitivity sensing across various applications.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a manifestation of orofacial neuropathic pain disorder, always deemed to be an insurmountable peak in the field of pain research and treatment. The pain is recurrent, abrupt in onset and termination similar to an electric shock or described as shooting. A poor quality of life has been attributed to trigeminal neuralgia, as the paroxysms of pain may be triggered by innocuous stimuli on the face or inside the oral cavity, such as talking, washing face, chewing and brushing teeth in daily life. The pathogenesis of trigeminal neuralgia has not been fully elucidated, although the microvascular compression in the trigeminal root entry zone is generally considered to be involved in the emergence and progression of the pain disorder. In addition, orofacial neuropathic pain restricted to one or more divisions of the trigeminal nerve might be secondary to peripheral nerve injury. Based on current hypotheses regarding the potential causes, a variety of animal models have been designed to simulate the pathogenesis of trigeminal neuralgia, including models of compression applied to the trigeminal nerve root or trigeminal ganglion, chronic peripheral nerve injury, peripheral inflammatory pain and center-induced pain. However, it has not yet been possible to determine which model can be perfectly employed to explain the mechanisms. The selection of appropriate animal models is of great significance for the study of trigeminal neuralgia. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the characteristics of the animal models in terms of animal strains, materials, operation methods and behavior observation, in order to gain insight into the research progress in animal models of trigeminal neuralgia. In the future, animal models that closely resemble the features of human trigeminal neuralgia pathogenesis need to be developed, with the aim of making valuable contributions to the relevant basic and translational medical research.

Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy is becoming an increasingly important part of the management of lung cancer to facilitate surgical resection. This study aimed to summarize the treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) and wound complications of neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Eligible studies of neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy for NSCLC were identified from PubMed, Embase and Web of Science. The endpoints mainly included TRAEs and wound complications. Stata18 software was used for statistical analysis with p < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Twenty studies including a total of 1072 patients were eligible for this study. Among the patients who received neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy, the pooled prevalence of any grade TRAEs was 77% (95% confidence interval [CI] [0.64-0.86]), grade 1-2 TRAEs was 77% (95% CI [0.58-0.89]) and grade ≥3 TRAEs was 26% (95% CI [0.16-0.38]). Surgery-related complications rate was 22% (95% CI [0.14-0.33]). Among the wound complications, the pooled rate of air leakage was 10% (95% CI [0.04-0.23]), pulmonary/wound infection was 8% (95% CI [0.05-0.13]), bronchopleural fistula was 8% (95% CI [0.02-0.27]), bronchopulmonary haemorrhage was 3% (95% CI [0.01-0.05]), pneumonia was 5% (95% CI [0.02-0.10]), pulmonary embolism was 1% (95% CI [0.01-0.03]), pleural effusion was 7% (95% CI [0.03-0.14]) and chylothorax was 4% (95% CI [0.02-0.09]). Overall, neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy in NSCLC results a high incidence of grade 1-2 TRAEs but a low risk of increasing the incidence of ≥3 grade TRAEs and wound complications. These results need to be confirmed by more large-scale prospective randomized controlled trials and studies.

BACKGROUND: Early life events play significant roles in tissue development and animal health in their later life. Early nutrition, through in-ovo delivery, has shown beneficial effects on improving intestinal health in broiler chickens. However, the underlying mechanism is not fully investigated. A recently developed enteroid culture technique allows investigations on intestinal epithelial functions that are close to physiologic conditions. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we evaluated the short- and long-term effects of in-ovo administration of glutamine (Gln) on intestinal epithelial development and functions by using intestinal enteroid culture and tissue electrophysiologic analysis. METHODS: A hundred eggs of commercial Cobb500 broilers were in-ovo injected with 0.2 mL of either phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or 3% Gln at embryonic day 18 (E18). Chicks were killed on the day of hatch, and at 3- and 14-d posthatch. Enteroids were generated from the small intestine. After 4 d of culture, enteroids were harvested for 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine proliferation, fluorescein isothiocyanate-4 kDa dextran permeability, and glucose absorption assays. At day 3 (d3) and day 14 (d14), intestinal barrier and nutrient transport functions were measured by the Ussing chamber. The gene expression of epithelial cell markers, nutrient transporters, and tight-junction proteins were analyzed in both intestinal tissues and enteroids. RESULTS: In comparison with the PBS control group, in-ovo Gln increased intestinal villus morphology, epithelial cell proliferation, and differentiation, and altered epithelial cell population toward increased number of enteroendocrine and goblet cells while decreasing Paneth cells. Enteroids gene expression of nutrient transporters (B0AT1, SGLT1, and EAAT3), tight junction (ZO2), glucose absorption, and barrier functions were enhanced on the day of hatch. Long-term increases of intestinal di-peptide and alanine transport were observed at day 14 posthatch. CONCLUSIONS: Together our results suggested that the in-ovo injection of Gln stimulated intestinal epithelium proliferation and programmed the epithelial cell differentiation toward absorptive cells.

Species from east China belonging to the subgenus Curtonotus were studied, resulting in the description of a new species, Amara (Curtonotus) beijingensissp. nov. The type locality is Xiaolongmen Forest Park in Beijing. All the known macropterous Curtonotus species from eastern China are reviewed and for each species taxonomical notes, illustrations, and new provincial records are noted. An improved key for their identification is provided as well.

Recently, the 2-µm wave band has gained increased interest due to its potential application for the next-generation optical communication. As a proven integration platform, silicon photonics also benefit from the lower nonlinear absorption and larger electro-optic coefficient. However, this spectral range is far beyond the photodetection range of germanium, which places an ultimate limit for on-chip applications. In this work, we demonstrate a waveguide-coupled photodetector enabled by a tensile strain-induced absorption in germanium. Responsivity is greatly enhanced by the proposed interleaved junction structure. The device is designed on a 220-nm silicon-on-insulator and is fabricated via a standard silicon photonic foundry process. By utilizing different interleaved PN junction spacing configurations, we were able to measure a responsivity of 0.107 A/W at 1950 nm with a low bias voltage of -6.4 V for the 500-µm-long device. Additionally, the 3-dB bandwidth of the device was measured to be up to 7.1 GHz. Furthermore, we successfully achieved data transmission at a rate of 20 Gb/s using non-return-to-zero on-off keying modulation.

Liquid metal (LM) faces numerous obstacles like spontaneous coalescence, prone oxidizability, and deterioration in photothermal conversion, impeding the potential application as photothermal agent. To tackle these issues, several studies have focused on surface engineering strategy. Developing a feasible and efficient surface engineering strategy is crucial to prevent the aggregation and coalescence of LM, while also ensuring exceptional photothermal conversion and biosecurity. In order to achieve these goals in this work, the biomimetic polydopamine (PDA) armor was chosen to encase a typical LM (eutectic gallium-indium-tin alloy) via self-polymerization. Characterization results showed that the PDA encased LM nanoparticle exhibited enhanced photothermal stability, photothermal conversion, and biosecurity, which could be derived from the following factors: (1) The PDA protective shell acted as an "armor", isolating LM from dissolved oxygen and water, inhibiting heating-accelerated oxidation and shape morphing. (2) The exceptional near-infrared absorption of PDA was conducive to the photothermal conversion. (3) The biomimetic characteristic of polydopamine (PDA) was advantageous for improving the biosecurity. Hence, this work presented a new surface engineering strategy to reinforce LM for photothermal conversion application.

BACKGROUND: Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) is a rare congenital heart disease with a limited body of literature. This retrospective cohort study investigates QAV morphology, function, and clinical outcomes. METHODS: Echocardiography was used to assess valvular function. Morphological characteristics such as phenotypes, raphe, regurgitant orifice area (ROA), and aortic dilation (diameter >40 â€‹mm) were assessed by cardiac CT. Patients were followed up for the combined event of all-cause death and aortic valve replacement (AVR). RESULTS: Ninety QAV patients (screened from 322385 CT scans) were included (mean age 55.2 â€‹± â€‹13.6 years, 61.1 â€‹% male). Isolated significant aortic regurgitation (AR) was present in 75.6 â€‹% of patients. The cohort was dominated by type I (four equal leaflets, 37.8 â€‹%) and type II (3 larger and 1 smaller leaflets, 42.2 â€‹%) QAV. Fused raphe was present in 26.7 â€‹% of patients. ROACT was correlated with AR severity and aortic dilation (41.1 â€‹%, n â€‹= â€‹37). Among patients without AVR at baseline (n â€‹= â€‹60), one died and 17 underwent AVR during a median follow-up of 35.0 months (IQR:17.3-62.8). ROACT was associated with an increasing risk of combined event (as a categorical variable with a cut-off of 21.4 â€‹mm2, HR â€‹= â€‹4.25, 95%CI 1.49-12.17, p â€‹= â€‹0.007; as a continuous variable (per mm2 increment), HR â€‹= â€‹1.04, 95%CI 1.01-1.07, p â€‹= â€‹0.003). Additionally, ROACT had incremental prognostic value when added to the AR severity model (area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve increased from 86.8 to 88.4, p â€‹= â€‹0.004). CONCLUSION: QAV is characterized by variable anatomy, progressive AR, concomitant cusp fusion and aortic enlargement. ROACT may be a potential ancillary prognostic marker in patients with QAV.

In dynamic environments, robots require instantaneous detection of moving events with microseconds of latency. This task, known as moving event detection, is typically achieved using event cameras. While light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors are essential for robots due to their dense and accurate depth measurements, their use in event detection has not been thoroughly explored. Current approaches involve accumulating LiDAR points into frames and detecting object-level motions, resulting in a latency of tens to hundreds of milliseconds. We present a different approach called M-detector, which determines if a point is moving immediately after its arrival, resulting in a point-by-point detection with a latency of just several microseconds. M-detector is designed based on occlusion principles and can be used in different environments with various types of LiDAR sensors. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of M-detector on various datasets and applications, showcasing its superior accuracy, computational efficiency, detection latency, and generalization ability.

ABSTACTA chemical investigation of the endophyte Penicillium sp. Nb 19, isolated from leaves of the traditionally medical plant Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek., yielded one new indole diterpenoid, 7-methoxy-13-dehydroxypaxilline (1) together with seven known metabolites (2-8). The obtained structure of compound 1 was elucidated by its spectroscopic data. In addition, the absolute configuration of compound 6 was confirmed by ECD for the first time. Compounds 1-6 were evaluated for antitumor activity against MCF-7, HepG2, and HCCC-9810 cell lines.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an airway-associated lung disorder, resulting in airway inflammation. This article aimed to explore the role of the krüppel-like factor 9 (KLF9)/microRNA (miR)-494-3p/phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) axis in airway inflammation and pave a theoretical foundation for the treatment of COPD. METHODS: The COPD mouse model was established by exposure to cigarette smoke, followed by measurements of total cells, neutrophils, macrophages, and hematoxylin and eosin staining. The COPD cell model was established on human lung epithelial cells BEAS-2B using cigarette smoke extract. Cell viability was assessed by cell counting kit-8 assay. miR-494-3p, KLF9, PTEN, and NLR family, pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) levels in tissues and cells were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction or Western blot assay. Inflammatory factors (TNF-α/IL-6/IL-8/IFN-γ) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Interactions among KLF9, miR-494-3p, and PTEN 3'UTR were verified by chromatin immunoprecipitation and dual-luciferase assays. RESULTS: KLF9 was upregulated in lung tissues of COPD mice. Inhibition of KLF9 alleviated airway inflammation, reduced intrapulmonary inflammatory cell infiltration, and repressed NLRP3 expression. KLF9 bound to the miR-494-3p promoter and increased miR-494-3p expression, and miR-494-3p negatively regulated PTEN expression. miR-494-3p overexpression or Nigericin treatment reversed KLF9 knockdown-driven repression of NLRP3 inflammasome and inflammation. CONCLUSION: KLF9 bound to the miR-494-3p promoter and repressed PTEN expression, thereby facilitating NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated inflammation.

Fully stimulating the capacity of light-driven phase change materials (PCMs) for efficient capture, conversion, and storage solar energy requires an ingenious combination of PCMs, supporting structural materials, and photothermal materials, therefore motivating the synergistic effects between the components. Herein, this work thoroughly explores the interaction forces between PCMs and supporting structural materials and the synergy between PCMs and photothermal materials in photothermal conversion. Rejoicingly, when capitalizing on the prepared directional channel structure of hierarchically porous composite aerogel (PEPG) as a supporting structural material, a superior paraffin wax (PW) encapsulation rate of 85.11% is achieved, and the prepared PEPG2-PW has a high phase change enthalpy of 182.9 J/g. The van der Waals force and Lewis acid-base action between PEPG and PW molecules reveal the excellent stabilities of PEPG-PW. More importantly, the PEPG2-PW has an ultrahigh photothermal conversion efficiency of 95.2% under 1 sun irradiation and durability. Most importantly, the COMSOL Multiphysics software calculations demonstrate that transparent PW can anchor sunlight on the surface of graphite nanoplates, converting it into heat by enhancing the loss of graphite backbone lattice vibrations, and the accumulated heat is then stored in molten PW. This work provides some design principles for high-efficiency solar-thermal conversion materials.

Optical whispering-gallery-mode microsensors are a promising platform for many applications, such as biomedical monitoring, magnetic sensing, and vibration detection. However, like many other micro/nanosensors, they cannot simultaneously have two critical properties - ultrahigh sensitivity and large detection area, which are desired for most sensing applications. Here, we report a novel scanning whispering-gallery-mode microprobe optimized for both features and demonstrate enhanced Raman spectroscopy, providing high-specificity information on molecular fingerprints that are important for numerous sensing applications. Combining the superiorities of whispering-gallery modes and nanoplasmonics, the microprobe exhibits a two-orders-of-magnitude sensitivity improvement over traditional plasmonics-only enhancement; this leads to molecular detection demonstrated with stronger target signals but less optical power required than surface-enhanced-Raman-spectroscopy substrates. Furthermore, the scanning microprobe greatly expands the effective detection area and realizes two-dimensional micron-resolution Raman imaging of molecular distribution. The versatile and ultrasensitive scanning microprobe configuration will thus benefit material characterization, chemical imaging, and quantum-enhanced sensing.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry toxins have been widely used in the development of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for pest control. This work aimed to establish more cost effective methods for used Cry2Aa toxins. Three immunoassay methods (IC-ELISA, DAS-ELISA, and CLEIA) were successfully developed in this work. The mAb was used as the detecting antibody, for the IC-ELISA, the range of IC20 to IC80 was 1.11 µg/mL - 60.70 µg/mL, and an IC50 of 10.65 µg/mL. For the DAS-ELISA, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were 10.76 ng/mL and 20.70 ng/mL, respectively. For the CLEIA, the LOD and LOQ were 6.17 ng/mL and 7.40 ng/mL, respectively. The scFv-based detections were the most sensitive for detecting Cry2Aa. The LOD and LOQ for the DAS-ELISA were 118.75 ng/mL and 633.48 ng/mL, respectively. The LOD and LOQ for the CLEIA, read as 37.47 ng/mL and 70.23 ng/mL, respectively. The fact that Cry2Aa toxin was recovered in spiked grain samples further demonstrated that the approaches might be used to identify field samples. These methods provided good sensitivity, stability, and applicability for detecting Cry2Aa toxin, promising ultrasensitive monitoring and references for Cry toxins risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: Coronary arteries drain into the left ventricle, known as coronary-left ventricular fistula (CLVF), an extremely rare anomalous coronary artery disease. Little is known about the outcomes following transcatheter closure (TC) or surgical closure (SC) of CLVF. METHOD: This was a single-center retrospective study including 42 consecutive patients who underwent either the TC or SC procedure from January 2011 to December 2021. The baseline and anatomic characteristics of the fistulas, procedural outcomes, and late outcomes were summarized and analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age was 31.6 ± 16.2 years, with 28 male patients (66.7%). Fifteen patients underwent SC group and the remaining received TC group. There were no differences in age, comorbidities, clinical presentations, and anatomic characteristics between the 2 groups. The procedural success rate was similar (93.3% vs. 85.2%, P = 0.639) without operative and in-hospital mortality in both groups. Notably, patients who underwent TC had a significantly shorter postoperative in-hospital length of stay (2.11 ± 1.49 vs. 7.73 ± 2.37 days, P<0.001). The median follow-up time was 4.6 years (2.5-5.7 years, TC group) and 3.98 years (0.42-7.15 years, SC group), respectively. No difference was observed in the incidence of recanalization of the fistula (7.4% vs. 6.7%, P = 1) and myocardial infarction (0% vs. 0%). Cerebral infarction due to discontinuation of anticoagulants happened to two patients in the TC group. Importantly, thrombotic occlusion of the fistulous tract with patent parent coronary artery was found in 7 patients of the TC group. CONCLUSION: Both transcatheter and SC are safe and effective for patients with CLVF. Thrombotic occlusion is a noteworthy late complication, and its presence indicates the use of anticoagulants lifelong.

Botanicals (BOTs) are well known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. They have been widely used as feed additives to reduce inflammation and improve intestinal functions in agricultural animals. However, the effects of BOTs on chicken intestinal epithelial functions are not fully understood. The 3D apical-out chicken enteroids recapitulate the intestinal tissue, and allow convenient access to the luminal surface, thus serving as a suitable model for investigating gut functions. The aim of this study was to identify the roles of BOTs in protecting the intestinal epithelium in chicken enteroids under challenging conditions. Apical-out enteroids were isolated from the small intestines of 18 days-old chicken embryos. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 10 µg/mL) and menadione (400 µM) challenges were performed in the media with or without BOTs. Paracellular Fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran 4kD (FD4) permeability, inflammatory cytokine gene expression, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation were analyzed post-BOTs and challenges treatments. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc multiple comparisons among treatments. The results showed that the LPS challenge for 24 h induced a 50% increase in FD4 permeability compared with nontreated control; thymol, thyme essential oil, and phenol-rich extract significantly (P < 0.02) reduced FD4 permeability by 25%, 41%, and 48% respectively, in comparison with LPS treatment. Moreover, the gene expression of inflammatory cytokines was upregulated, tight junction proteins and defensins were downregulated (P < 0.05) after 6 h of LPS treatment, while these BOTs treatments significantly restored the LPS-induced gene expression alterations (P < 0.05). Menadione oxidative challenge for 1 h significantly increased the ROS level compared with unchallenged control. Enteroids treated with thymol and thyme essential oils showed 30% reduced ROS levels, while the phenol-rich extract reduced them by 60%, in comparison with the challenged group (P < 0.0001). These data confirmed the role of BOTs in supporting the barrier function and reducing the disruptive effects of inflammation and oxidation in the chicken intestine.

The intervention time of stability control system is determined by stability judgment, which is the basis of vehicle stability control. According to the different working conditions of the vehicle, we construct the phase plane of the vehicle's sideslip angle and sideslip angular velocity, and establish the sample dataset of the stable region of the different phase planes. To reduce the complexity of phase plane stable region division and avoid large amount of data, we established the support vector regression (SVR) model, and realized the automatic regression of dynamic stable region. The testing of the test set shows that the model established in this paper has strong generalization ability. We designed a direct yaw-moment control (DYC) stability controller based on linear time-varying model predictive control (LTV-MPC). The influence of key factors such as centroid position and road adhesion coefficient on the stable region is analyzed through phase diagram. The effectiveness of the stability judgment and control algorithm is verified by simulation tests.

Herein, a designed pyridine-based conjugated imprinted polymer (CIP) was constructed by introducing 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) via an in situ copolymerization reaction. In addition to the good adsorption performance of Cr(VI), this polymer also showed high efficiency in reducing Cr(VI) in water by photocatalysis. The ingenious design of the polymer not only furnished insight into the enhanced photocatalytic reaction kinetics but also provided a new route for the modification of the molecular skeleton of the conjugated polymer photocatalyst.

Molecular engineering of carbon nitride (CN) was considered as a suitable and compelling strategy to overcome the intrinsic imperfections and enhance photocatalytic H2O2 production. However, the photocatalytic H2O2 production of conventional single molecular engineering is still unsatisfactory, and the comprehension of photogenerated carrier migration and separation is still indistinct. Herein, dual molecules were engineered on CN molecular skeleton for achieving an outstanding photocatalytic rate of H2O2 production. The photocatalytic H2O2 production rate of the dual molecules engineered CN was up to 3320 µmol g-1 h-1, which was approximately 25 times than that of the pristine CN. After the dual-molecular engineering, pyrimidine and cyano group were co-grafted. Synchronously, K ion and Na ion were co-embedded near the interlamination of CN layers. The synergistic effect of the dual molecules in CN not only restrained photogenerated carrier recombination and broadened visible light response by modulating the intrinsic energy band structure, but also enhanced the capture of the photogenerated electrons and accelerated the migration of proton. Hence, the photocatalytic 2e- oxygen reduction reaction, the rate-determining step, was significantly strengthened. Additionally, caused by the positive valence band potential, the H2O oxidation reaction became an indispensable role in photocatalytic H2O2 production. This work provided a viable route to modulate the molecular skeleton of organic semiconductors and presented a promising strategy to obtain high-efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production.
